PISCATAWAY, NJ — A first-of-its-kind community center will be coming to Piscataway Twp., featuring three indoor pools, basketball courts and a full-sized indoor gym.

The Piscataway Community Center will be located on what is currently an open field at 520 Hoes Lane (Rt. 18) just south of the Kennedy Library. It is slated to open in the summer of 2020.

Piscataway does not currently have a community center or indoor public gym such as this.

The $32 million facility will have an aquatic center with three pools, a full-size basketball court with an overhead running track, a fitness center with modern exercise machines, dance and art studios, a youth activity room and a community room, men’s, women’s and family locker rooms, a café and a large space for group meetings.

Piscataway Township became able to build the Community Center after Mayor Brian C. Wahler and the Township Council boosted local tax revenue by wooing logistics centers and other new companies to move into Piscataway. Those companies not only pay municipal taxes, they also provide jobs for residents, Wahler said.

"The singular reason we can build the Community Center is because we now have the funds as a result of the Township Council and I rejuvenating our tax base with state-of-the-art logistics centers and other new companies," Mayor Wahler said. "We attracted these businesses to move into Piscataway by recognizing the changes in the regional and national economy from office parks to clean fulfillment centers. These new companies are already providing good paying jobs for hard-working residents as well as revenue for this and other important projects."

A construction groundbreaking on the complex will be March 30 at noon. Crews have already started building infrastructure for the pools and the base of the building’s exterior walls. Learn more here: http://www.piscatawaynj.org/ad...
