WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Whoa! Great news for the Woodbridge community: NJ Transit just announced they are expanding weekday service at the Avenel train station by more than 40 percent.
More weekday trains will be added and the Avenel train station will get weekend service for the first time since April 1985. The service enhancements will begin this Sunday, September 8.
The new weekend service will include 21 stops each day on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Weekday service will be increased from 27 to 38 stops, primarily during midday and late evening hours. See a full schedule below.

This is in direct response to community requests and ridership growth at the Avenel station, said NJ Transit.
"In this case, our customers asked for more service. We listened and delivered!" said NJ Transit president and CEO Kevin Corbett. “This expansion of service for our Avenel customers will spur economic growth in and around Woodbridge and improve quality of life for the hundreds of customers who use this station every day.”

Woodbridge's decision to permit a 500-unit "transit-village" apartment complex at the Avenel station — on the site of the former General Dynamics plant — is clearly paying off, as the area around the station is now booming with residents and business. The complex is called Station Village at Avenel. There is also the Avenel Performing Arts Center located right there, which just opened this past April.

“Station Village at Avenel, the Avenel Performing Arts Center and the North Jersey Coast Line commuter train station represent a $50 million transit-related development project,” said Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac. "(There was) a need to add additional stops that will better serve Avenel Station Village commuters and visitors attending performances at the arts center."
McCormac said Woodbridge will also be expanding the availability of commuter parking at several lots near the station.
