WOODBRIDGE, NJ — As March draws to a close, Woodbridge's COVID cases "still remain high," said Mayor John McCormac. Town officials are also noticing a new trend of who COVID is primarily affecting: Young people.

170 new cases were reported over the March 27/28 weekend and only 13 of those new cases were in people older than 65.

More than 70 of those new cases were in those 30 and under. One theory for this is that vaccination has been widespread for those 65 and older in New Jersey.

"The recent numbers are the reverse of last year in terms of age and continue the recent trend," said McCormac. "Of the 170 people reported sick over the weekend, there were 73 that were 30 or under and only 13 who were 65 and over."

This follows the same trend as last week in Woodbridge, where 185 new cases were reported, and 71 were in those 30 and under, with only 11 new cases in those above 65.

According to CDC data, the death risk for coronavirus is extremely low for those in their 20s, 30s and 40s.

"It is quite alarming that 71 people out of the 185 are 30 and younger while only 11 are 65 and over," said McCormac last week. "We keep reminding people to check on your elderly neighbors but you also have to worry about your children and grandchildren to make sure they follow the rules about limitations on gatherings plus mask wearing and social distancing."
