Woodbridge's Fireworks Are Back, After First Being Canceled

The early April decision to cancel Woodbridge's fireworks show was met with outcry; many town residents were not happy.

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Woodbridge's fireworks show will happen this year.

After first deciding in early April that he would preemptively cancel the July 4th fireworks this summer, Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac announced last Friday that the fireworks actually will happen this year.

Woodbridge fireworks are back on for Friday, July 2, at Alvin P. Williams Park in Sewaren, which opens at 4:00 p.m. In amazing news, popular Central Jersey band "The Nerds" will also play before and after the fireworks show.

McCormac said on April 12 that he had to cancel the show as Gov. Phil Murphy had not lifted his crowd-size limit on the number of people who can gather outdoors.

Then on May 4, McCormac said he was still worried about crowd size inside the park, even though Murphy had said that week that fireworks, parades, festivals and country fairs can happen this summer.

McCormac was going to postpone the show and have fireworks in the fall.

"But now that the social distancing limits have been lifting, we are going to go with the normal date," McCormac told the Home News Tribune this week.

Woodbridge's fireworks show can attract up to 20,000 people — 10,000 inside the park and 10,000 outside, according to the newspaper. McCormac said he expects the crowds will be even bigger this year due to pent-up desire after COVID.
