EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — The Bergen County coronavirus vaccine mega-site has opened at the Meadowlands Racetrack, hitting an important benchmark in one of the state's most highly affected counties. But it had to close on Tuesday because it ran out of vaccinations.

State officials also warned that winter weather could cause disruptions throughout the state's vaccination system.

Gov. Phil Murphy said on Tuesday that he expects a big shipment will come in on Tuesday so the site can resume by Wednesday. Read more: Gov. Murphy Urges Patience, Fix For NJ COVID Vaccine Shortage

Vaccinations began on Thursday and Friday of last week, when Hackensack Meridian officials said they could administer "hundreds" of doses per day. Along with the Atlantic County Convention Center site, the Bergen site was among the final mega-sites to open in the state.

"We are thrilled to be part of this winning strategy to deliver these vital vaccines to our communities, which is the most effective way to conquer this pandemic," said Robert C. Garrett, chief executive officer of Hackensack Meridian Health.

Officials said they'll eventually have the capacity to vaccinate upwards of 2,400 people a day at the site, but when that can happen will depend on when the state starts receiving more doses.

Hackensack Meridian has inoculated 33,000 people as of Friday, officials said.

More people will have the opportunity to get vaccinated at the mega-site, but officials said appointments are still limited.

"Please note that appointments fill up quickly and we are continuing to expand service over the next several weeks as the state provides vaccine," Hackensack Meridian officials said.

All appointments are currently full, according to the registration website, but a link to register is available here: https://www.hackensackmeridian...

The megasite is located at the former Race Track/West Gate Entrance Lot M.

Vaccines are limited to healthcare workers, first responders, people 65 and older or between the ages of 16-64 with underlying health conditions, according to the site.

There are other vaccination sites available for Bergen County residents, including in Ridgewood, Teaneck and Paramus.
