Club Hub: Installation Dinner, Kitchen Tour and More

Here's a look at all that's going on in the Clubs around town.

Welcome to "Club Hub," a weekly column featuring news and events from the clubs around town. Here's a look at what's going on with some of the organizations in Franklin Lakes:

"The Woman's Club of Franklin Lakes will hold its annual Installation Dinner on Wednesday, May 11, at the Preakness Hills Country Club in Wayne.    Special guests at this event include Patty Whitehouse, President of the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs and Dorothy Emmerich, Ramapo District Vice President. Ms. Emmerich will install new members and officers in a candlelight ceremony.

The Woman’s Club of Franklin Lakes is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting community, area and national causes. Founded in 1949 as part of the National Organization of Woman’s Clubs, the Franklin Lakes organization has been donating funds and offering support to the Borough on a continuous basis.  This year’s key beneficiaries are Gilda’s Club and the Center for Women’s Heart Health at Valley Hospital.

The Franklin Lakes branch of the Valley Hospital Auxiliary is co-hosting its 15th Biennial Kitchen Tour Wednesday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit 10 beautiful kitchens in Franklin Lakes, Wyckoff, Glen Rock, Ridgewood, and Saddle River created by Clive Christian, Tess Giuliani Designs, Kuche+Cucina, Salerno Custom Cabinetry, Signature Kitchens and Ulrich, Inc.

All proceeds benefit The Valley Hospital's Maternal-Fetal medicine unit and Valley Home Care's Maternal Child Health program. Tickets cost $45 each and may be purchased at Town & Country Pharmacy and Mango Jam in Ridgewood; Eurica in Wyckoff; Stage Left in Franklin Lakes; BB Clover Home and Marron & Gildea Realtors in Ho-Ho-Kus, and Saddle River Hardware in Saddle River. The Audobon Society of Lorrimer Sanctuary, 790 Ewing Ave., is open Wednesday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 
Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. The club is holding the following events:

  • Birding at the Celery Farm in Allendale on Thursdays in May from 7:30 a.m. to 10a.m. This distinctive area along Franklin Turnpike is a remnant farm and freshwater marsh, and has been preserved as open space with Green Acres funding. Meet in the parking lot of the Celery Farm on Franklin Turnpike, one-quarter mile north of the intersection of Franklin Turnpike and East Allendale Avenue in Allendale. Cost: $6 members, $8 nonmembers.

Kula for Karma along with Naturally Yoga is hosting Ride the Wave of Grace beach weekend May 14 and 15, at Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch. Join Geri Topfer, Penni Feiner, Kae Lonski and Sheryl Edsall, and special guest Rasa Lila in what is being hailed as "the most beautiful collective experience of Yoga, Community and the Beach."

Awaken your inner surfer, cultivate patience, courage, compassion and fearlessness with meditations, vegetarian fare, and special sessions titled Diving into the Heart of Your Dreams and Riding the Wave of Grace. The Franklin Lakes Lions Club will have its dinner meeting May 19 at 7 p.m. at High Mountain Golf Club.

The Lions Club is the world's largest service organization, with 45,000 clubs and 1.35 million members worldwide. It's primary cause is sight and blindness prevention.

The Franklin Lakes chapter has about 20 members and holds five fundraisers a year to support various local groups, including St. Josephs School for the Blind, Eva's Village in Paterson, Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, Eastern Christian Childrens Retreat, The Seeing Eye and Camp Marcella, a camp for blind children.

The club meets the first Thursday of every month in the history room of the Library for its business meeting and the third Thursday of every month at the High Mountain Golf Club for its monthly dinner meeting. Anyone interested in learning more about the Lions Club or considering becoming a member are welcome and encouraged to attend.

The Franklin Lakes Education Foundation is hosting its Eighth Annual Golf and Tennis Outing on June 9 at the Preakness Hills Country Club in Wayne. The tennis tournament begins at 10 a.m. and includes luncheon, rewards and gift. Golf tees off at 12:30 p.m.k with registration and a barbecue lunch at 11 a.m. The day will be followed with a cocktail reception, hors d'oeuvres and auction.

The FLEF's mission is to enrich and enhance the quality of education in the Franklin Lakes Pre-K to eighth grade public schools, beyond the constraints of the district's budget. The Foundation has funded programs, events, technology and classroom materials. Almost all of the funds raised are used for innovative ideas  that a direct impact on students.

The Franklin Lakes Seniors, Inc. meets on Wednesday, May 18 at 12:30 p.m. at the Bender Court Firehouse/Senior Citizen Center. The club is open to all residents 62 years of age or older. Residents wishing to join the organization may do so by attending a meeting and filling out a brief form. Initial membership fee is $5 and annual dues are $5. Meetings are $1, which goes into a 50/50 raffle, and covers the cost of a light lunch. The club meets the first and third Wednesday of the month.
