First Frost Possible In Some Parts Of N.J. Tonight, NWS Says

Temperatures could go down to the upper 30s in some parts of New Jersey tonight, the National Weather Service predicts.

Some colder weather is on the way with the start of fall in New Jersey, according to forecasters.

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for parts of Northern New Jersey, saying the season's first frost could come overnight Sunday.

"Patchy frost may develop late tonight. Any frost this early in the season could potentially damage sensitive vegetation if unprotected," according to the Hazardous Weather Outlook, issued early Sunday.

The frost isn't likely statewide, however. Forecasters predict Northwestern portions of the state, including Sussex County, are most at risk. But the entire state will feel chillier temperatures overnight. Be sure to wear a warm coat if heading out.

Overnight lows will range from the upper 30s in Sussex County, to the 40s across North, Central and South Jersey, the NWS predicts.

It would be early for a frost in New Jersey. The first frost typically occurs in early to mid October, according to Accuweather.

"Residents may want to bring potted plants indoors and/or place a protective covering over the most sensitive vegetation overnight," Accuweather says.

Overnight temperatures are expected to warm up later in the week. New Jersey residents can expect overnight lows in the 50s through the rest of the week, the National Weather Service says.
