Today, the Girl Scouts from Franklin Lakes Troop #96353 planted a Maple Tree in Flag Pole Park in Franklin Lakes to serve as a memorial to the three Girl Scouts and Mom who lost their life last year November 2018. The Girls wanted to do something to memorialize this event for other Girl Scouts and make them aware of what happened. The four girls today Aysha Shetov, Sofia Stella, Sophia Underfer, and Ava Dandeneau worked very hard to not only execute but also thoroughly plan the entire project to securing the resources, people and supplies to make this tree planting a reality.
Last November in Western Wisconsin a tragic accident occurred due to negligence and should have never happened. While the Girl Scouts were performing a notable community service to cleanup the side of the road; Colten Treu, a 21 year old male struck and abruptly killed all of them. Later that same Saturday; Colten was arrested by the police and taken to the Chippewa County Jail. The People who lost their life were

Jayna S. Kelley, 9, Autum A. Helgeson, 10, both of Lake Hallie, Haylee
J. Hickle, 10, and her mother, Sara Jo Schneider, 32, both from the Town
of Lafayette.

Later it was also reported that a fifth person was injured named Madalyn Zwiefelhofer who was hospitalized for three weeks before returning home. The Driver Colten did admit to the court that he saw the Girl Scouts and I quote "as wearing highly visible reflective vests"; seconds before crashing his F-150 Pickup Truck into 5 people and killing four of them. However; what is the reason you are probably wondering; so am I.

Well; it turns out that Coltin Treu and his roomate John Stender just bought Dustoff; a commonly used air keyboard cleaner. Coltin also admitted that he and his roommate were inhaling it to get high and I quote said "he took two short huffs and Stender took a few more"

While Driving Coltin said and I quote "he lost control of the vehicle and fishtailed after Mr. Stender grabbed the wheel" Later he drove home; place vehicle in front to hide the car but thanks to the cop stating I followed a "fresh fluid trail" which led me to their shared dwelling place. Treu & Stender were not around when the police officer came by but Treu later turned himself in that day.

Sounds like this is pretty bad, but it gets worse; Treu was also found to have been charged with a similar incident on Sep 30 2018; driving while intoxicated into Rusk County. Treu's car went into a ditch, rolled over and he also failed a sobriety test. The police found meth and marijuana in his vehicle while conducting a search. Treu was said to have one Drunk driving incident in 2014 plus this one in Rusk county. Treu was charged with four counts of homicide through negligence use of the vehicle and the detective stated "the crash happened before he went over hill and their were no blind spots".

Yes, Coltin is in Jail but something was lost :four precious girls and a mother not being able to live a life, live their passion or even experience anything. No one had the right to take those girls or Mother's lives away from them. My only question is if he had so many things against him why wasn't the law more vigilant since he was a strong flight risk from previous probation's he was on.

The Franklin Lakes Chamber of Commerce was honored and grateful to part of something such an unselfish display of compassion and understanding. Our Chamber is happy to recognize and reward individuals that stand for high moral, ethical, compassionate character. franklinlakeschamber.org
