Library Tax To Appear As Line Item On Tax Bill

The following is a message from the Franklin Lakes Public Library:

In the next few weeks, when you receive your third quarter property tax bill, you will see a new tax line for Public Library Tax. Is this a new tax? Absolutely not!

A recently passed state law, P. L. 2011, c.38 (S-2068), requires your public library tax to now be displayed separately from the general municipal tax line. It provides for more transparency in library funding and creates equality for municipalities supporting county, municipal and joint libraries as all will be displayed similarly on the tax bill. The amount of your general municipal tax line was reduced by the exact amount that your Public Library tax line now shows, so it doesn’t result in any increase in your taxes — it only changes the way your tax bill looks.

More information on this new law can be found on the state library associations website.
