Nature's Calling: The Celery Farm

More than 240 species of birds have been spotted at this nearby nature preserve.

If you've never been to the Celery Farm in Allendale, you are missing out on something special. The 107-acre freshwater wetland sits on Franklin Turnpike just north of the West Cresent Avenue intersection.

The preserve is owned by the borough of Allendale and maintained by the Fyke Nature Association, a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving undeveloped tracts of land in Bergen County.

A passive park with a well-maintained and level walking path, the Celery Farm makes for a nice family walk with young children, but leave the dogs home —they aren't welcome.

Perhaps the most popular use of the Celery Farm is for bird watching. More than 50 species of birds breed at the farm and more than 240 varieties of birds have been seen there, and several guided birding walks are held throughout the season.
