Ramapo Indian Hills Adopts Mask Optional Policy On Hot Days

"Masks will be optional in our school district, inclusive of the classroom, school bus and school grounds," school officials announced.

OAKLAND, NJ — Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District announced a new mask optional policy during days of excessive heat.

Officials did so via a statement posted to the district website, responding to new guidance from Gov. Phil Murphy, who this week said that "school officials are empowered to make the best decision for their buildings and communities" when it comes to mask wearing during "extreme weather conditions."

Many districts across the state have updated their policies to allow students to take their masks off as a heatwave moves through the area this week.

Below is the statement from the district:

"Earlier today, Governor Murphy announced via Twitter that, due to excessive heat, the decision to wear masks inside of the schools will be left to local school districts. Effective immediately, masks will be optional in our school district, inclusive of the classroom, school bus and school grounds. Students and staff who are not wearing masks must stay behind desk shields in the classroom, keep distance outside and throughout the school building."
