Shred It! Paper Recycling Event Today

Bring sensitive documents to the DPW between 9 a.m and 1 p.m. for secure shredding.

One way to avoid becoming a victim of credit theft is to shred sensitive documents. According to Franklin Lakes Police Lt. John Bakelaar, anything that may contain personal information, from credit card statements to medicals bills, should be shredded.

"Your cell phone bill, for example, contains a lot of personal information that you might not realize," he explained. "Anything with an account number on it that you discard should be shredded to be safe."

That includes all credit card correspondence, even it if doesn't have your full account number on it, medical bills, insurance statements, bank statements, cancelled checks, utility bills and phone bills.
