Student Wellness Requires a Multi-Pronged Approach

Dr. Fran NELSON, candidate for the Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education, discusses her approach to student wellness.

Hi I am Dr. Fran Nelson and I am running for one of the two seats on the Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education.

We need to talk about our children’s wellness. We spend a lot of time worried about grades, college applications, winning games but in the end we cannot forget their overall wellness.

We can do better. I will promote ongoing open dialogue that involves all stakeholders – parents, teachers, guidance counselors, administrators, and community members.

Our children are stressed. They are balancing way too much and we need to do a better job of supporting their social and emotional well-being. Our children have very busy lives between their academics, sports and activities. With social media and the phone always in hand our children don’t shut down. Their brains often do not have time to recharge.

I will advocate for a holistic approach to wellness. Too often wellness and academic achievement are separated into two conversations. Research tells us results come when they are seen as one.

I will advocate for more effective responses to vaping and substance abuse that involves education and in-school detention rather than suspension. I support a treatment and education-based response which research tells us is the most effective way to combat these problems.

I would encourage a thorough analysis of how we can better support our Guidance Departments.

Research shows putting students at the center of solving their own problems not only builds emotional intelligence it brings results.

Research also shows that integrating social-emotional learning into academic content develops better critical thinking skills.
