Wyckoff Promotes New Sergeant at Township Committee Meeting
The presence of family, friends and colleagues, as well as the stories shared by the Wyckoff Police Chief, are telling of Sgt. Tom Tully.
Tom Tully, a 21-year veteran of the Wyckoff Police Department, was promoted to the ranks of Sergeant as the Town Hall’s court room of was filled with smiling supporters at Tuesday’s Township Committee meeting.
The presence of family, friends and colleagues, as well as the stories shared by Wyckoff Police Chief Benjamin C. Fox, are telling of Sgt. Tully.
“Sometimes in life, there’s [events] that define you as an individual,” Chief Fox started off before telling the audience that Sgt. Tully had once arrested a woman for shoplifting, who said she had stolen food because she was hungry. Upon driving her back to her residence, Sgt. Tully also learned she did not have electricity.

“Sometimes people are down on their luck,” Chief Fox said.
But Sgt. Tully had it in his heart to go the extra mile. So after his shift, he purchased a bag of groceries for the woman and delivered it to her home.

“If that doesn’t say something about Tully, I don’t know what does,” Chief Fox said before sharing that Sgt. Tully’s daughter, Sara, had also made ribbons for the officers to wear for breast cancer awareness.
“Clearly this is a family that cares about people,” Chief Fox said.
Graduating with a degree in photography from the New York School of Visual Arts, Tully was first hired in 1993 and has worked in the traffic bureau, often photographing car accidents, and assists with the management of the police vehicle fleet.
Sgt. Tully will be assigned to patrol in charge of a squad of officers each shift.
