New Mexico Ten Commandments Monument: US Supreme Court Denies Appeal

Justice Neil Gorsuch did not take part in the high court's action. He had served on the federal appeals court that weighed in on the matter.

WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal from Bloomfield, New Mexico, which was fighting a court order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the lawn outside City Hall. The justices Monday allowed lower court rulings to stand, which found it violated the Constitution's ban on the government endorsing a religion.

The monument was erected in 2011 and challenged the following year.

Justice Neil Gorsuch did not take part in the high court's action because he served on the federal appeals court in Denver that weighed in on the matter.
