Albuquerque Police Officer Shot: Suspect Detained After Standoff

Police say SWAT officers launched several gas canisters into the home before the man surrendered in the hourslong standoff.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — The man suspected of shooting a police officer in Albuquerque and barricading himself inside a home for hours is in custody.

The man fired several rounds at officers who were responding to a domestic dispute Wednesday night on the 3900 block of General Bradley NE, police said.

The man, identified as 38-year-old Maximilano Villegas, barricaded himself inside the home, prompting authorities to call in a SWAT team. SWAT officers took Villegas into custody before dawn Thursday after an hourslong standoff. (For more local news, click here to sign up for real-time news alerts. SWAT officers launched gas canisters into the home before Villegas surrendered, Officer Daren DeAguero said. No officers fired any shots.

Police say the wounded officer was taken to a hospital with injuries and is in good condition.

Villegas was not hurt. He faces numerous charges, including child abuse and aggravated battery on a police officer.
