Marila Mancha-Garcia, Tara Palomares, and Lesha Harenberg were recognized for being named finalists for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Four New Mexico educators have been named finalists for prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Three of the four are APS teachers. Marila Mancha-Garcia from nex+Gen Academy High School and Tara Palomares from Sandia High School have been named 7–12 Mathematics State finalists and Lesha Harenberg from Eldorado High School has been named a 7–12 Science State finalist. State finalists represent the most outstanding teachers New Mexico has to offer and serve as both a model and an inspiration to students and fellow teachers. Teachers who are selected as awardees receive a trip to Washington, D.C., where they attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities. They also receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation, a Presidential certificate, and join an elite cohort of award-winning teachers who can influence state, jurisdiction, and national STEM teaching.
