Rochester Toddler Dies From Gunshot To Head, Dad Charged

Police recovered a 9mm handgun, but haven't said how the shooting happened. No one else was in the home at the time, police said.

ROCHESTER, NY — A Rochester toddler Zayden Phillips was shot in the head inside a home last week and died of his injuries Tuesday. Now, his father is charged with gun crimes.

Charles Timothy Phillips, 36, was charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon and pleaded not guilty Saturday. He was jailed without bail.

Police recovered a 9mm handgun, but haven't said how the shooting happened. No one else was in the home at the time, police said.

Phillips previously served prison time for robbery and was freed in April 2016, authorities said. As a convicted felon, Phillips is not allowed to own a gun.
