Why Do We Walk?
We walk for our daughter Mya. She is 18 and a senior at Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons. She will be attending Siena College in the fall to pursue her bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Mya was diagnosed with NF1 when she was 6 months old. Her life has been a series of doctor’s appointments, MRIs, surgeries, braces and X-rays. From the young age of 8 until she was 12, she wore a Boston brace for scoliosis 22 hours a day. If you don’t know what that is just think of a rigid plastic brace that goes up to your chest, into your arm pits and down to below your hips. It helped stop her scoliosis without surgery, but it was rough. She has had numerous cutaneous neurofibromas removed and has a few plexiform neurofibromas. She had a large femur lengthening surgery two years ago and was in a wheelchair for 7 months. She just had a hip replacement 6 months ago. She also has a learning disability. However, even after all that she is the most wonderful, well rounded, compassionate, loving, funny, kind, smart and driven young woman you will ever meet. She loves football, cheerleading, dance, and art. She is the most amazing big sister to her little brother.
