Long Island City Hotel Racks Up $24K In Construction Violations

A hotel under construction on 39th Avenue in Long Island City racked up $23,750 in penalties for a host of safety violations, the city says.

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A hotel under construction in Long Island City racked up $23,750 in penalties for a host of safety violations, the Department of Buildings announced Tuesday.

Department of Buildings inspectors who showed up to the hotel site at 23-15 39th Ave. in January found the general contractor, Sunny Builders NY Corp., failed to enact adequate safety measures for construction workers and pedestrians walking by the site, according to a news release.

The contractor failed to provide overhead protection for construction workers and proper safety netting, there were no workers assigned to stop vehicle and foot traffic when necessary, and a pedestrian walkway didn't meet city specifications, the inspection found.
