New 'Affordable' LIC Apartments Require $76K Household Income

A new batch of "affordable" apartments in Long Island City is open for applications, and rents start at $2,241 for a studio.

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — Thirty-three new "affordable" apartments are up for grabs in a new luxury rental building in Long Island City, but it'll take a household income of at least $76,000 to even qualify.

Applications are now open for the set of "affordable" units in One LIC, a 21-story development steps away from the Queensboro Plaza subway station, according to the city Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

Monthly rents start at $2,241 for a studio and go as high as $3,283 for a three-bedroom apartment, records show.

A dozen one-bedroom apartments will rent for $2,362 a month under the affordable housing lottery, compared to the $3,162 monthly rent for a one-bedroom advertised on One LIC's website.

Applicants must make at least $76,835 a year across their entire household to be eligible, though the requirement may not apply to those with qualifying rental subsidies.

The income requirement rises to $112,560 for the five available three-bedroom apartments, which are only open to households of at least three people.
