Affordable Apartments Open In Bed-Stuy For As Little As $524

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — New affordable apartments are up for grabs in Bed-Stuy for as little as $524 per month.

A new building called "The Astra," found at 645 Gates Ave., has hit the affordable housing lottery with 89 studio, one, two and three-bedroom units.

A slate of the apartments are available to New Yorkers at four different income brackets, including those who make 40 percent of the area median income, or as little as $20,160 per year for the studio.

At that income bracket level, there are two studios, four one-bedroom, two two-bedroom and one three-bedroom spots up for grabs. The rent for each unit is $524 for a studio, $667 for a one-bedroom, $810 for a two-bedroom and $929 for a three-bedroom.

The next income bracket, those making 50 percent of the area's median income, requires at least a $25,509 per year for a studio. There is one studio, four one-bedrooms, two two-bedrooms and two three-bedrooms at this level.

The rest of the apartments fall at either the 100-percent or 130-percent area median income level.

The 100-percent bracket requires a $43,235 salary for a studio, while the 130-percent requires applicants make at least $53,966 per year for a studio spot.

The Astra, found near Throop Avenue, includes bike storage lockers, a shared laundry room, a community center, an outdoor and rooftop terrace, a community center and a recreation room, according to the posting.

It is one of several Brooklyn buildings currently on the city's affordable housing lottery.

Another, also in Bed-Stuy, is The Garnet, which has nearly 100 spots open on Fulton Street. In that building, units are available at the 50-percent, 100-percent and 150-percent area median income bracket.
