'Affordable' Bed-Stuy Studio Costs $2K A Month

Bed-Stuy is about to get more affordable housing, but it's only available to those earning more than $67,715 a year.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN -- All it takes to find affordable housing in Bed-Stuy is a six-figure income.

Seven apartments at 924 Myrtle Ave. are slated to hit the city's affordable housing lottery on Monday, but those units cost thousands of dollars every month and are only available to households earning between $70,000 and $135,590 a year, city records show.

The cheapest option is one studio apartment that goes for $1,975 a month and is available to people with an annual income between $67,715 and $95,030, according to the NYC Housing Connect listing.

Households earning between $72,000 and $108,550 annually can apply for two one-bedroom apartments going for $2,100 and $2,210, and four two-bedroom apartments cost up to $2,666 a month are available to those earning between $87,429 to $135,590 a year.

Every unit in the newly building is designated for residents earning 130 percent of the Area Median Income, as were about two-thirds of all affordable housing units listed in Brooklyn last month, a Patch analysis found.

City Comptroller Scott Stringer recently criticized Mayor Bill de Blasio's Mandatory Inclusionary Housing in a public report for the large percentage of high-cost apartments available through the program, which allows developers to construct larger buildings if a percentage of the units are affordably priced.

"We talk a lot about closing the inequality gap in our city," Stringer said. "Leaving households at the edge of homelessness to fend for themselves is not how we're going to get there."

Building amenities include a bike room, rooftop deck, gym, and card-operated laundry room, records show. The deadline to apply is Jan. 9, 2019.
