Halsey Street Developers Seek Landmarks Commission's Approval

This will be the third time Brookland Capital has requested permission to demolish a Bed-Stuy garage to build apartments.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN -- Plans to demolish and redevelop two Bed-Stuy garages will be heard for the third time at a Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday, city records show.

Developers hope the LPC will approve alterations for a Queen Anne style garage and tearing down a utilitarian garage at 524-534 Halsey St., to be replaced with an apartment complex, records show.

The garage and its neighbor, a three-story Queen Anne style garage designed by Alex S. Hedmen in 1904, both situated in the Expanded Stuyvesant Heights Historic District.

Developers plan to expand the larger garage on the site of the smaller and convert the structure into a 35-apartment building, according to plans.

The commission has twice refused to approve Brookland Capital's proposals, arguing the structures were out of scale with the block, according to New York YIMBY.

Developers have since reworked the plans — promising to restore the Queen Anne-style building's original doors and brick, remove balconies, plant seven street trees and restructure the fencing — and gained support from Community Board 3 in December.

Photos of the new proposal can be found on New York YIMBY.
