$100 Million Apartment Complex To Take Over Former Psych Center

Plans to turn the 130-year-old Central Islip Psychiatric Center, which has been abandoned since 1996, into luxury apartments are underway.

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY — A new luxury apartment complex is planned to take over the site of a former Central Islip Psychiatric Center, which has been closed since 1996.

The Belmont at Eastview will be a revitalization of the 83-acre property which also previously the home of the New York Institute of Technology's Central Islip campus. The historic location was originally home to the hospital over 130 years ago.

The complex will include a mix of 354 studio, one-bedroom , two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments. The gated community will also offer expansive open spaces and other amenities such as several dog parks, an abundance of playground/picnic areas and several miles of walking trails.

There will also be a community center with amenities such as a fitness center, sports courts, tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pool, and a lounge area.

The developers, based in Bethpage and Farmingdale, are in the late stages of approval from Islip Town officials and are currently applying for tax breaks from the town's IDA before moving forward with the $100 million project, according to a report in Newsday.

The project is expected to begin in the spring of this year, CBS reports.

"This truly is a win-win. All of those buildings are being preserved and they are going to be upgraded and they will be beautiful," Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter told CBS2.
