Alfano students are broadening their knowledge of science
through hands-on learning lessons. In May, seventy 6th Grade students
engaged in a series of live virtual field trips with the Cold Spring
Harbor Laboratory DNA Learning Center. Students enjoyed interactive
workshops where they made a baggie cell model, extracted DNA from wheat
germ, and learned about how the mystery of Anastasia Romonov was solved
using evidence. The cost of the trips was covered by a grant, and
Central Islip graduate, Brittany Johnson, was one of the instructors.
Alfano Elementary School Principal Ms. Carmen Vazquez, said the science
lessons provided immeasurable value to the
students' study and research skills which will be enhanced as they
continue their academic activities during the next school year.
