Homeless Man Surrenders After 16-Hour Standoff With Police: PD
The 27-year-old barricaded himself in a C. Islip home for 16 hours over the weekend until officers talked him into surrendering, police say.
CENTRAL ISLIP, NY — A homeless man was taken into custody after a 16-hour standoff with police in Central Islip over the weekend, according to Suffolk Police. Officers responded to a 911 call on Saturday at 11:30 p.m. from a resident of a Wheeler Road home who told cops that an unknown man wielding a knife was inside his home, police said.
The resident fled the house before police arrive. Once police officers, Emergency Service Section officers and the Hostage Negotiation Team arrived, they surrounded the perimeter of the location as the 29-year-old man inside the house threw barbells and a flammable device from a second story window at officers on the ground, police said. No officers were injured.
Emergency Service Section officers finally entered the home on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. While securing the main floor, they found the man and were able to talk him into surrendering into their custody, police said. The man was transported to a local hospital for evaluation and will be charged with burglary and a parole violation.
