Man Arrested, Dog Fatally Shot During Domestic Dispute Call: PD

The dog charged at the officer during the arrest resulting in him firing his weapon, fatally shooting the dog, and injuring the man.

BRENTWOOD, NY — A man was injured and a dog was fatally shot during an arrest for a domestic dispute in Brentwood Saturday afternoon, according to Suffolk Police. Officers responded to the home on Claywood Drive at 4:40 p.m. in response to a call for a domestic incident, police said.

When the man involved in the dispute was being placed under arrest at 5:30 p.m., his dog charged at the arresting officer, police said. The officer fired his gun at the dog and inadvertently shot the dog’s owner in the hand, police said.

The man was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with non-life-threatening injuries. The dog died of a gunshot wound and the officer was uninjured.

The man was charged with first degree criminal contempt in connection to the domestic incident. He is currently being treated at the hospital and is scheduled to be arraigned at a later date. Homicide Squad detectives are investigating.
