CENTRAL ISLIP, NY — An Oakdale man was arrested on Wednesday in connection to a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Central Islip last week, according to Suffolk Police. On Friday, March 6, officers responded to Hawthorne Avenue, just north of Storey Avenue, in response to a multi-car crash. An unknown car struck a pedestrian, 35-year-old Terrance Tuffini, of Central Islip on Hawthorne Avenue and fled the scene.

Tuffini was then struck by a 2007 Toyota Yaris and was hit again by a 2008 Dodge Nitro. He was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead. The drivers of the Toyota and the Dodge were not injured.

An investigation by detectives revealed that 63-year-old Philip Tavares was responsible for the crash, police said. Tavares was charged with leaving the scene of an incident resulting in death.
