Drag Racing Leads To Weapon, Drug Charges: Police

The arrests are the latest in an ongoing enforcement crackdown targeting drag racing

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY — Three men from the Bronx were arrested after being accused of drag racing on the Saw Mill River Parkway in Yonkers.

The Westchester County Police said, around 2:30 a.m. Monday, two cars were seen racing north on the Saw Mill near McLean Avenue.

A sergeant tried to stop one of the cars, a blue BMW, near Yonkers Avenue, but it fled west on the avenue, where it was involved in a minor crash with another county police vehicle.

Police said the driver and two passengers in the BMW were taken into custody and a loaded .22-caliber handgun and a some marijuana were seized. The BMW was impounded.

The driver of the BMW, Tyshawn Palmer, 27, of the Bronx, was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony; reckless driving, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, illegal speed contest and fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, misdemeanors, and multiple violations of the vehicle and traffic law.

The two others in the car — Rolando Heredia, 23, and Loucchie Brown, 22, both from the Bronx — were charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, felonies.

A spokesman for the county police said the arrests are the latest in an ongoing enforcement crackdown targeting drag racing, vehicles with inadequate mufflers and other violations that cause excessive noise. Multiple arrests, summonses and impounds have resulted in recent months from the ongoing enforcement initiative.

Public Safety Commissioner Thomas A. Gleason said that the county police will continue targeted enforcement on the parkways patrols to combat the dangers of drag racing and the nuisance of its associated noise. In addition, patrol officers will continue to work on joint enforcement efforts targeting drag racing with the Yonkers, Greenburgh and New York State Police departments.
