Stealing Cars, Assaulting Officer Leads To Prison For Bronx Man

Police said they found 13 bags of marijuana in the man's underwear.

BRONXVILLE, NY — A Bronx man who was accused of stealing cars and assaulting a police officer will be spending time behind bars. Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino Jr. said Rasheed Campbell, 23, of the Bronx, was sentenced to three to five years in state prison.

Campbell pleaded guilty in June to the following:

  • Second-degree assault (three years in prison; 5 years' post-release supervision)
  • Two counts of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property (two to four years in prison on each count and restitution for the victim and the victim's insurance company)

The sentences will run concurrently.

Police said, on Oct. 7, 2017, a Bronxville police officer attempted to stop a blue 2015 Toyota Camry which he recognized as being reported stolen.

The vehicle did not stop and the driver lost control as he turned onto Bronxville Road. The Camry went onto the sidewalk, struck another vehicle and stairs and then overturned.

The driver fled on foot, and a blood sample found on the driver-side airbag was later traced to Campbell.

In a separate incident on Dec. 23, a Mount Vernon police officer located a reported stolen Mercedes-Benz in a parking lot.

The officer approached and saw Campbell in the driver's seat.

He resisted arrest and injured the officer before he was taken into custody, police said.

Thirteen bags of marijuana were found in Campbell's underwear, according to law enforcement.

The injured officer received surgery for a ruptured tendon in his right arm.
