Free Air Conditioners Available for Low-Income Brooklyn Residents
The units are being provided to those who qualify for public assistance and/or have a medical need for an air conditioner.

BROOKLYN, NY — Free air conditioners are available for low-income Brooklyn residents who have a medical need to keep cool.
The air conditioners are provided by the state's Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), are are for individuals who meet HEAP assistance levels, or who are on other forms of public assistance.

Applicants must also have documentation showing they have a medical need for an air conditioner, must be citizens or qualified aliens, and must not have a working air conditioner less than 5 years old, among other requirements.

Applicants can call HEAP at (212) 835-7216.
The air conditioners will be installed by a list of vendors that applicants can select from.
The Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, located at 387 Kingston Ave., is one of those vendors, and they can also help applicants apply for an air conditioner. Those interested can stop by the office, or call Bella at 718-771-9000, extension 7701.
Applications will be accepted through August 31, or until the program's funding runs out.
