BROOKLYN, NY — A vandal who tagged Brooklyn's Grand Army Plaza arch with a mysterious phrase Sunday found himself surrounded by police after getting stuck on a stolen crane, according to reports and video.

The graffiti artist stole a cherry picker and tagged the Prospect Park entrance's archways with a just before 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, according to police and the Daily News.

The vandal, who turned out to be 36-year-old Denis Shelagin, had enough time to paint the phrase "Bird God" in giant letters before police arrived to try and get him down, police said. Cops said they weren't sure what the meaning was behind the tag.

Shelagin, who is from Washington, was left standing on the crane surrounded by cop cars because he couldn't figure out how to lower the cherry picker, video shows.

He eventually was brought down and charged with making graffiti, criminal mischief and possession of graffiti instruments, police said.

Workers tried to cover the graffiti with a giant blue tarp later that day, when Mayor Bill de Blasio was scheduled to visit the famed plaza for a lighting ceremony of Brooklyn's largest menorah, photos show.
