Brooklyn Child Allegedly Beaten To Death By Mother: Body Unclaimed For Over 2 Weeks

The body of Zamair Coombs, a 4-year-old, hasn't been claimed by a family member over 2 weeks after the murder.

BROWNSVILLE, BROOKLYN — The body of 4-year-old Zamair Coombs is still being housed in the morgue more than two weeks after he was allegedly beaten to death by his mother, a spokesperson for the Brooklyn Medical Examiner's Office confirmed to Patch Friday night. The family member listed on Coombs' paperwork was his grandmother, the spokesperson said, but the spokesperson had no further details on the circumstances surrounding the boy's burial.

Zarah Coombs, the boy's mother, confessed to striking him with a broomstick multiple times and leaving him in a makeshift bathtub to drown, according to court documents. Coombs was charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, among other charges, police said. Her next court date is Feb. 24. Commenters responded angrily on Facebook, asking why local politicians like Brooklyn borough president Eric Adams or neighborhood council members hadn't stepped up to help out. Others were curious why no GoFundMe or other fundraiser had been started for the child.

Coombs had told investigators that on the night of Jan. 25 she found her young son Zamair Coombs face down in a plastic storage bin filled with water after she left him unattended in the container for an unidentified amount of time, according to the criminal complaint. The doctor at Brookdale Hospital who treated the 4-year-old said the child was brought to the hospital on Wednesday and pronounced dead on Thursday, the complaint said.
