Brownsville After-School 'Campus' to Help Kids Focus on Education
'The Campus,' an after school tech and arts program at Brownsville Collaborative Middle School, launches Oct. 24.
BROWNSVILLE, BROOKLYN — When State Senator Jesse Hamilton haphazardly witnessed the shooting murder of 28-year-old Rysheen Ervin, a resident of the Howard House in Brownsville, he was in the neighborhood to attend the first stakeholder's meeting for a soon-to-open after-school program called "The Campus" at the Brownsville Collaborative Middle School.
As the October launch-date gets closer for "The Campus," an after-school program to teach local children about tech, arts and entrepreneurship, Hamilton emphasizes the importance of helping to guide kids away from violence and toward learning opportunities.
"I know firsthand some of the challenges these young people are facing because I grew up in public housing in New York and will always be a champion for the residents of NYCHA. Their experience is my experience," Hamilton said in statement sent to Patch.

"With the Campus, we are sending that message of community determination and perseverance to Brownsville, Hamilton said. "We are bringing together contributions from both the state and the city, as well as insight and expertise, experience and institutional knowledge, neighborhood know-how and love of community. All those elements will make the Campus a success."
