Cypress Hills Houses Resident Found Shot Dead in Building Lobby, Police Say

Tyrone Stewart, 31, was found bleeding out Tuesday morning in a building lobby at his East New York-area public housing project, cops say.

CITY LINE, BROOKLYN — A young resident of the Cypress Hills Houses complex near East New York was shot and killed Tuesday morning inside a building across from the one where he lived, according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

Tyrone Stewart, 31, of 1230 Sutter Ave., was found "with multiple gunshot wounds to the body" in the lobby of the building just north of his — at 1200 Sutter Ave. — around 9:30 a.m., police said.

Stewart was rushed to Brookdale Hospital in nearby Brownsville, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Homicide detectives had made no arrests by Tuesday afternoon, and the investigation into Stewart's death was ongoing, according to the NYPD.

Stewart was killed within the NYPD's 75th Precinct, which covers East New York, Cypress Hills, New Lots, City Line and Starrett City. According to official police statistics, through mid-September, the number of shootings in the 75th was unchanged compared to the number of shootings recorded in the same time period last year. The number of shooting victims, however, has dropped by 22 percent.
