New East New York Public School Will Have Rooftop Vegetable Garden, Officials Say

The new school will serve 1,000 students grades pre-k through eight and is slated to open in 2020.

EAST NEW YORK, BROOKLYN — A new public school is coming to East New York in 2020, city officials announced.

The 1000-seat school will be built on the block bounded by Atlantic Avenue, Dinsmore Place, Logan and Chestnut streets after a City Council vote approved its construction Wednesday.

The new school will accommodate students in Community School District 19 from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.

The building, slated to be completed by 2020, will have art and music rooms, science labs, a full gymnasium, library, and a green roof where students can grow their own vegetables, City Councilman Rafael Espinal announced.

“A school is so much more than a building with classrooms," said Espinal in a statement. "It is where our youth spend the majority of their waking hours learning valuable lessons of community, respect and friendship.”

The school is one of many projects from the East New York Neighborhood Plan, which is investing more than $260 million in neighborhood parks, roads, and schools.

The 28,540-square-foot plot of land designated for the new school was originally considered for affordable housing, Patch reported in December.
