BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — A Brooklyn assistant principal was the only educator in New York to win one of this year's coveted academic award known as the "Oscars of Teaching."

The Milken Educator Awards announced Wednesday that Princess Francois — who works at the Math, Engineering and Science Academy (MESA) charter school in Bushwick — was one of 40 educators across the country that would be getting this year's distinction.

Award leaders and state education officials surprised Francois with the award during a school assembly at the high school, saying her impact on both the students and the 70 staff she oversees earned her the $25,000 prize.

"Princess Francois understands the value of a STEM education," Milked Senior Vice President Jane Foley said. "By working to help students advance themselves and their communities, Francois opens the door to a brighter future. Her uplifting vision and strategic work is the kind of inspirational leadership we seek, and we're proud to welcome her as a Milken Educator."

The Milken Educator Awards have been doling out prizes to deserving teachers and administrators for 30 years.

The distinction is meant to celebrate teachers and elevate them so that they are activated even more so in the classroom, the organization said. Research shows teacher quality is the driving in-school factor behind student growth and achievement, they added.

Francois oversees 70 staff and 500 students, including 22 teachers and two department leaders that she holds direct responsibility for when it comes to professional growth.

The daughter of Haitian immigrants, Francois grew up in the same community where she now works.

"Students see her as living proof of what they can accomplish despite their socioeconomic background," the organization said. "Former students talk about her lasting impact, crediting her with their increased confidence, love of science and decisions to pursue careers in STEM fields. Teachers see Francois as not just a coach but a mentor."

Francois led several initiatives at the Bushwick school, reorganizing professional development to help support at-risk students and struggling teachers, and creating the school's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. She also helped revamp Black History Month at MESA and mentors student teachers from Long Island University.
