Bushwick Has Zero Quality Middle Schools: Report

School District 32, which covers Bushwick, is a "middle school desert," according to one lobbyist group.

BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — School District 14, covering Williamsburg and Greenpoint, is a complete "middle school desert," according to a new report from StudentsFirstNY.

Of course, it should be said that StudentsFirstNY — a controversial lobbying group that advocates for more charter schools in NYC — never met a Bill de Blasio public-education policy it didn't despise. However, a couple hundred of the group's supporters made a pretty fair point Thursday when they gathered on the steps of City Hall and demanded the mayor address the embarrassing lack of quality middle-school options in NYC — especially in some of the city's more low-income districts.

Using state test results in math and English, the group found eight particular school districts throughout NYC where student test scores at every single middle school were below the city's average in 2016.

The city's Department of Education said the study was not to be trusted. 'This report is riddled with inaccuracies, contradictions, and a fundamental misunderstanding of where students attend middle school, and it also ignores the unprecedented investments and progress we’ve made in improving middle schools citywide," it said in a statement.

A total of 73,000 students are "trapped in middle school deserts," according to StudentsFirstNY.
