Bushwick Sees Biggest Uptick Of Artists In New York City, Study Finds

Bushwick doesn't have the most artists. But it's working on it.

BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — No place is getting artsier faster than Bushwick, a new study has found.

Bushwick’s artist population has grown faster in the 21st Century than any other neighborhood in New York City, according to data from the Center for an Urban Future.

The neighborhood that hosted only 150 artists in 2000 boasted 1,824 artists in 2015 — an uptick of more than 1,100 percent.

As a point of comparison, Bedford-Stuyvesant — the neighborhood with the second largest increase of artists — only saw a 268 percent rise in the same period.

Bushwick still only ranks 11th on the list of big artist populations — Manhattan snagged six of the top ten spots, Williamsburg and Park Slope represented for Brooklyn as Astoria did for Queens.

The study also found an area where Bushwick is not developing its artistic population. Researchers found that the public schools of District 32 had some of the fewest visual art studios, dance spaces and music rooms in the borough.
