BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — A beloved Bushwick taco joint was shut down by health inspectors who found filth flies, broken toilets and workers handling food with their bare hands, city records show.
Health inspectors closed La Lupe at 9 Jefferson Ave. on Wednesday when they found the six sanitary violations in the Bushwick eatery, according to city records.
Health inspectors found workers handling food, filth flies food held at unsafe temperatures, a broken bathroom and non-vermin proof facilities, records show.

The Mexican joint earned 83 points — almost three times the number it takes a restaurant to earn a C grade — during the inspection.
La Lupe recently won a more prestigious honor: Bushwick Daily readers named its tacos the best in the neighborhood last fall.

La Lupe has been inspected 10 times since it first opened its doors in 2015, receiving a B grade in April when inspectors contaminated found food not thrown away properly and workers with uncovered hair near prep stations, and another B in September for workers touching the food and more filth flies.
Patch was not immediately able to reach La Lupe management for comment.
