Rock Climbing Gym Opening In Bushwick This February, Owners Say

MetroRock will host 50-foot-tall walls and artwork from the Bushwick Collective.

BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — Bushwick’s first rock-climbing gym is gearing up to open next month, according to its owners.

MetroRock, a chain of climbing gyms based in Boston, will open its fourth location at 321 Starr St. in February, the gym announced on Instagram.

“Chugging right along here in Brooklyn,” owners wrote. “These walls can’t wait to be climbed!”

The massive 20,000-square-foot space will offer “brand-spanking-new” 50-foot-tall walls designed by industry professionals, as well as bouldering, yoga and free weight facilities, said MetroRock owner Patrick Enright.

The warehouse — which once housed a window manufacturer — will also include artwork from Bushwick Collective artists such as See One.

“These are really well designed, state of the art facilities,” Enright said. “It’s going to be a really nice environment.”

What will set MetroRock apart from other bouldering facilities in Brooklyn — Brooklyn Boulders in Gowanus, Everyday Athlete in Brooklyn Heights and The Cliffs in DUMBO — will be the emphasis on rope climbing, Enright said.

The 50-foot tall walls mean Brooklyn climbers will literally be able to scale new heights.

“Half of our terrain is going to be for rope climbing,” Enright said. “Brooklyn Boulders has low-level rope climbs, but that’s not what their focus is.”

MetroRock will also host an outpost of Mammut, a Swiss climbing gear retailer, Enright said.

MetroRock Brooklyn membership will typically cost $1,350 per year, $30 per day or $270 for 10 visits, according to the gym’s website. But climbers who buy memberships before Jan. 27 can get $151 discount.

The climbing gym has set a tentative opening date of Feb. 1, but Enright said MetroRock will absolutely open by the end of February.

Bushwick Daily was first to report that MetroRock would open in February. Read their coverage here.
