Volunteers Will Build A Farm In Bushwick Friday

Dozens of volunteers are going to turn the RiseBoro Youth Center courtyard on Gates Avenue into a farm, organizers said.

BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — This week, a farm grows in Bushwick.

Dozens of volunteers will gather in the courtyard of the RiseBoro Youth Center at 1474 Gates Ave. Friday morning to build a community farm, nonprofit organizers said.

The 30 volunteers will begin building row garden beds and picnic tables, turning salvaged tires into garden beds and painting the exterior fence at about 10 a.m.

The farm comes courtesy of Rebuilding Together NYC, a nonprofit that provides free home repairs for low-income New Yorkers, and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation.

Once it's up and running, Bushwick Grows Community Farm will host classes for neighborhood children, culinary workshops and sell produce grown on site.

The farm was designed after local residents offered up input about the kind of farm they’d like to see in the neighborhood.
