Walmart Buys Bushwick Delivery Company Parcel

Walmart said it will leverage Parcel's delivery services to bring a same-day grocery service to New York City.

BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN — Walmart bought a Bushwick-based delivery company in order to bring a same-day grocery service to New York City, the retailer announced Tuesday.

Walmart purchased Parcel, a high-tech delivery company with a warehouse on Grattan Street near Morgan Avenue, for an undisclosed price on Sept. 29, according to a statement on the company’s website.

The mega-retailer will incorporate Parcel into its own same-day delivery service, Jet, which recently announced it would start selling high-end groceries online aimed at young city-dwellers.

The acquisition of Parcel will allow Walmart to compete directly with Amazon’s Prime Now service, which first launched in 2014.

Parcel will continue to providing scheduled and same-day delivery services in New York for online retailers, such as Bonobos and Martha Stewart’s meal delivery service, Martha & Marley Spoon, according to Recode.
