80 Flatbush Towers Approved By City Planning Commission: Reports

City planners approved plans for a massive Boerum Hill development despite opposition from residents and local elected officials.

BOERUM HILL, BROOKLYN — City planners approved plans to build two giant towers on Flatbush Avenue despite the local Community Board’s rejection of the development, according to reports.

The City Planning Commission voted unanimously Monday to support 80 Flatbush — a 74- and 34-story tower development slated for the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and Schermerhorn Street— even though Community Board 2’s Land Use Committee recommended the project be abandoned in April, Curbed reported.

Alloy, the project developer, hopes to tear down the Khalil Gibran International Academy and build a larger academy, a new elementary school, offices and 900 residential units, according to plans.

The project has been fiercely opposed by residents and elected officials who say it will cause overcrowding and Boerum Hill Association members who argue the towers "will not integrate or respect the scale and design of our adjacent brownstone neighborhood."

The plans still need to be approved by the City Council zoning subcommittee, whose members are slated to vote next week, the land use committee, and the full council, according to the Commercial Observer.

Councilman Stephen Levin, who represents Boerum Hill, will have the final say but has yet to declare his position, Curbed reported.
