Body Found Floating Off Brooklyn Coast Is 4th This Month: NYPD

A 21-year-old man was found dead in the water off of Pier 9 in the Columbia Waterfront District.

COLUMBIA WATERFRONT DISTRICT, BROOKLYN — A man was found dead in the waters off of the Columbia Waterfront District over the weekend, making it the fourth body to be found in Brooklyn waters this month, police said.

Police found the 21-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive around 9:42 a.m. Saturday after hearing that there was a person in the water near Pier 9, or 70 Hamilton Avenue. When they got there, the NYPD Harbor Unit took the man's body out of the water and onto the shores of the pier. Emergency responders pronounced him dead.

The man is at least the fourth dead body to be found floating in Brooklyn waters this month.

Just over a week ago, three bodies were found within three days near the Sunset Park and Red Hook waterfronts.

Police said they found a man floating in the water near Brooklyn Army Terminal's Pier 4 on July 18. The day before that, another man's body was found in the water just two miles north, near 28th Street and Second Avenue.

On July 16, police were sent to Erie Basin, an inlet of water near the Red Hook Channel, and found a woman's body in the water near 499 Van Brunt St.

In addition to the bodies, human remains were found floating in the water off Coney Island Beach earlier in July.

Police told Patch after the third body was found that so far the incidents don't appear to be connected.

"At this time there is no indication that these incidents are related," the spokesperson told Patch.

All of the bodies have not been identified yet by police, who say the investigation into each is ongoing. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death in all cases.
