Carroll Gardens Fried Chicken Spot Wilma Jean Closes This Weekend

Wilma Jean, which opened at 345 Smith St. in 2014, will serve its last batch of fried chicken on April 1, owners announced on Instagram.

CARROLL GARDENS, NY — The fried chicken restaurant on Smith Street, previously dubbed the best in the city, will close down for good over the weekend, owners announced on Instagram.

Wilma Jean plans to shut the doors of their 345 Smith St. restaurant on Sunday after nearly four years of serving up Southern food from the storefront, Eater New York first reported.

"We would also like to specifically thank the neighborhood of Carroll Gardens: a small town in the world's largest and greatest city," owners wrote on Instagram announcing the closing. "We wish you the best in the coming days and years. In the meantime, keep calm and eat fried chicken."

The owners did not say why they were shutting down the spot.

Wilma Jean opened in 2014 by Rob Newton and Kerry Diamond, taking over for the pair's Vietnamese spot Nightingale 9 after it moved to a larger space nearby, Eater reported.
