Carroll Gardens Mom's 'Goodnight Moon' Video Captures Hearts

Brinda Adhikari put the kid's classic to a beat and melody and gained a little bit of internet fame.

CARROLL GARDENS, BROOKLYN — A Carroll Gardens mom's rendition of "Goodnight Moon," set to a catchy melody and a backing band, has gained her a little slice of internet fame.

Brinda Adhikari, a producer for CBS News, got some help from a friend to record the song and used her video skills to put together a mini-movie to accompany it.

The result was a two-minute sing-a-long that has registered more than 11,000 views and 100 shares on Facebook alone. (Scroll down to see the video.)

"A couple of years ago when my daughter was just a couple of years old, I had just gotten in the habit of reading a bunch of children’s stories. And the ones that rhyme I was like, 'Oh,' and I sort of heard a song in them," Adhikari, a mother of two, told Patch.

"This one particular tune just got stuck my head, and I sang it and sang it to her and she liked it," Adhikari explains. "But just recently a friend of mine who’s a singer-songwriter heard it and said, 'This sounds like an actual song. Why don’t we get together with a producer friend and record it?'"

The video first got featured on Pardon Me For Asking, a local blog in the neighborhood. From there it spread throughout the community.

"It’s been kind of fun, and it’s been just like friends so friends and so forth," Adhikari said. "I happen to know a fair number of moms through the BoCoCa community. So it's been really neat. It's been a total surprise to see the reaction. People clearly love that book."

In the comments on her original Facebook post, which has since been made public, people have shared stories about showing the song to their kids.

"You have a new fan! She made me play it three times! Way to go!!" one mom wrote, accompanied by a photo of her and her kid.

"Ellie is obsessed and made me put this on repeat our entire cab ride home. Can you please make more of these?!!!!" another one wrote.

Adhikari says she's glad her song can bring some more joy to reading a kid's classic.

"These days with iPhones and Netflix, it’s easy to look at a book like 'Goodnight Moon' and think it’s kind of boring, and it makes me kind of sad to think that," she said. "It was a fun way to bring new eyes to the book."

Adhikari also said she's gotten requests to do more in the future, and she said she already has an idea up her sleeve.

"The key is to keep them really simple. And the ones that rhyme are really good," she said. "I'm not going to tell you which one I’m working on next."
