COBBLE HILL, BROOKLYN — A popular Cobble Hill spot has been awarded the top prize by a French organization ranking New York City's restaurants for the first time.

Saint Julivert Fisherie, on Clinton Street, was named the best bistro of the year in Le Fooding's awards for New York City, according to the New York Times.

The French organization ranked restaurants in New York, Paris, London and Mexico City this year, marking the first time in its 20 years that it gave awards to eateries outside of France. Le Fooding was founded as a way to provide a counterpoint to traditional restaurant guides, the Times said.

In New York, Saint Julivert was followed by Long Island City's Adda and the Financial District's Crown Shy as runners-up.

This isn't the first time the Cobble Hill restaurant, opened by Alex Raij and Eder Montero, has gotten attention from food critics.

Earlier this year, it was one of three spots that became the only restaurants in Brooklyn to make it to the finals of the prestigious James Beard Awards. Raij and Montero were nominated for the Outstanding Restaurateur list for the fisherie and another of their restaurants, just a few blocks away, La Vara.

The Le Fooding ranking was formerly called Priceless Cities Best New Bistros and in partnership with Mastercard.

The winner in Paris was Le Maquis, Expendio de Maiz Sin Nombre won the Mexico City award and there was a tie in London between Tayer + Elementary and Mao Chow.

Le Fooding defines bistros as “a lively restaurant with no limits, that offers plates full of free culinary expression, plus a festive atmosphere and competitive prices.”

The winners were chosen from a list of a few dozen candidates for each city, which was narrowed down by a panel of experts and then chosen by a combination of online voting and expert opinion. The restaurants had to have been opened in the last 12 to 18 months to qualify, the Times said.
