Cycling for a Cure for Alzheimer's on The Longest Day (R)

Cyclist bikes from Coney Island to help find a cure for Alzheimer's disease

Over the weekend, cyclist Matt Michalek celebrated The Longest Day(R) on Coney Island, which marked the one year anniversary of his cross-country bike trip. The trip was way to honor the memory of his grandmother, Elaine Quirk, who passed away from Alzheimer’s disease, while raising funds to help the Alzheimer's Association support research to find a cure. Matt asked colleagues and friends he made along the way to pay $2 a mile, and by the time he reached the Pacific coast, he had collected more than $6,000 to donate to the Alzheimer's Association.

Matt chose to reprise his effort this year with a 5-mile ride from the same spot on Coney Island to reiterate the importance of working with the Alzheimer’s Association to find a cure, and to preserve the memories of the Grandmother who meant so much to him and his family. Matt's goal last year, and again in 2017, is to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness about the disease, while providing more care, support, and opportunities for research.

The Longest Day is all about love. Love for all those affected by Alzheimer's disease. You can show your support and team up with the Alzheimer’s Association and select any activity you love — or an activity loved by those affected — to help end Alzheimer’s. Together, we will raise funds and awareness for care and support while advancing research toward the first survivor of Alzheimer’s.
